1840s–1890s Early Foundations

Iowa Becomes the 29th State.

Iowa statehood 1846

Lucas Ruhl emigrates from Altendorf, Hessen (Germany) to Davenport, Iowa. He becomes a respected figure in the local business community, working in grain, milling, and commission firms like Burrowes & Prettyman and R.M. Abbott.

William F. Ross opens General Insurance Office at No. 11 East Second Street in downtown Davenport. This is the company that would eventually become Ruhl&Ruhl.

Ross sells the insurance agency to John Berwald.

John H. Ruhl opens a grocery store with John H. Schaefer in the Anken Flats building at 512 W 3rd Street.

John H. Ruhl purchases Will Noth's interest in the insurance agency then known as Berwald, Hornby & Noth.

1900s–1910s The Ruhl Legacy Takes Root

John Berwald retires and the company is renamed Hornby & Ruhl.

Hornby leaves the company and the name is changed to Ruhl & Mittelbuscher. The same year the company was given exclusive rights to sell McClellan Heights properties.

1920s–1930s Like Father, Like Sons

John H. Ruhl's sons Edward L. Ruhl and C. Arthur Ruhl join the business. Edward focuses on real estate side of the business, while C. Arthur focuses on the insurance side. The company officially adopted the name Ruhl&Ruhl.

John H. Ruhl passes away; Edward L. and C. Arthur Ruhl take over full management of the company.

During the Great Depression, Ruhl&Ruhl continues operating, navigating the difficult financial period.

1940s–1950s A Family Tradition of Leadership

Ruhl&Ruhl purchases the First National Building in Davenport and relocates its headquarters from the Lane Building.

Third generation joins the business as John G. Ruhl and Charles A. Ruhl Sr. enter the company.

Edward L. Ruhl dies in a tragic gas explosion at a home under construction.

Leadership transitions to John G. Ruhl, Charles A. Ruhl Sr., and Don S. Challed after C. Arthur dies unexpectedly.

1960s–1970s Expanding and Developing

Ruhl&Ruhl celebrates their 100 year anniversary.

Charles A. Ruhl Jr. joins the real estate company, marking the fourth generation at Ruhl&Ruhl.

Ruhl&Ruhl rehabilitates the former Montgomery Ward building at 2nd and Brady in Davenport to use as its corporate offices.

1980s–1990s A New Generation and a New Chapter

Caroline Ruhl Beason, daughter of Charles A. Sr., joins the company.

Company opens first relocation center in the area.

The insurance and real estate businesses formally split into two companies. Charles A. Ruhl Sr. leads the real estate side; John G. Ruhl and Don S. Challed lead insurance.

Ruhl&Ruhl development team completes One River Place, a landmark office and commercial rehabilitation project along the Mississippi River.

John G. Ruhl, son of Charles A. Sr., joins the company.

Following the retirement of Charles A. Ruhl Sr., the company separates into two distinct entities, with Caroline Ruhl acquiring and leading the residential real estate company, and Charles A. Ruhl Jr. acquiring and leading the commercial division.

Ruhl&Ruhl Commercial acquires Weiner-Levin and joins NAI Network.

2000s–2010s A Legacy Carried Forward

Ruhl&Ruhl Realtors merges with McCarthy Bush Real Estate. This expands the company's footprint and positions it as one of the region's largest residential brokerages.

Formed mortgage joint venture with U.S. Bank, operating as 1862 Mortgage.

Entered a new JV with Shelter Mortgage, operating as 1862 Home Loans.

Chris Beason, Caroline's son, joins the company, becoming the fifth generation of family leadership.

Ruhl&Ruhl invests in Nelson Brothers Agency to connect clients with great deals on insurance.

Ruhl&Ruhl REALTORS is ranked Iowa's largest privately owned real estate company.

The mortgage company name changed to Ruhl Mortgage.

Ruhl Mortgage rename 2011

Caroline Ruhl, Chris Beason, and John G. Ruhl acquire full ownership of NAI Ruhl Commercial Company.

Ruhl Mortgage bought out Shelter and launched our current joint venture partnership with QCBT.

Chris Beason is named President of Ruhl&Ruhl REALTORS, taking on the leadership of the residential company.

Chris Beason becomes President of NAI Ruhl Commercial, marking a full leadership transition across both entities and cementing the fifth generation of family leadership.
